How to Connect with Recruiters on LinkedIn

Most of my resume and LinkedIn profile clients want to know how to connect with recruiters on LinkedIn. Once you’ve found a good prospect, here’s what you can do:

The Cautious Approach to Connecting with Recruiters on LinkedIn

InMail the recruiter the following message:

Dear Donna,

I understand you conduct national searches for CFOs. I’m a CFO and thus would like to be connected with you on LinkedIn.

With your permission, I will send you an invitation to connect. If this works for you, please let me know via your reply to this message.

Thank you,

John Doe

The Bold Approach to Connecting with Recruiters on LinkedIn

Send the recruiter an invitation to connect, along with the following message:

Dear Donna,

I understand you conduct national searches for CFOs. I’m a CFO and thus would like to be connected with you on LinkedIn.

Thank you,

John Doe

You can do this via the Connect button on their profile.

If you don’t see a Connect button, click on the three buttons to the right of their photo. You should find a Connect option there.

Don’t Waste Your Time

Check the recruiter’s profile for signs of life:

  1. Are they a Premium member with a gold In badge to the left of their name?
  2. Does their profile show any recent activity?

If not, they might have sourcers or researchers who spend their time on LinkedIn while they work with clients and candidates. If that’s the case, try to find that person and connect there. They will be the person charged with finding you.

Stay Out of Jail

When I invite strangers to connect, I give them 30 days to respond, then I withdraw my invitation. I keep about 40 outstanding invitations on my account and I’ve never had a problem with LinkedIn freezing it for spamming potential connections.

I don’t know what the upper limit of outstanding invitations is, nor do I know how many you can send in a 24-hour period.

You can test the limits once if you want. If you get frozen, LinkedIn will probably restore your account. I’ve never wanted to go there. I know people who have had their accounts frozen. None of them enjoyed the experience.
